    I wrote a book

Seven and a half years ago, a story poured out of me. From writing and editing, to complete abandonment and desertion, to revisiting and rekindling, to endlessly rewriting and reediting, my project is now complete. But I also know it’s only the beginning…

    What it’s about

The Only Way Out is a novel that tells the gripping tale of a bully, a victim and a bystander. Their lives are forever changed by what happens during their first year of high school. Although at first glance this is a young-adult novel about bullying, it is also a story that tells the tale of silence, torment, secrecy, mental illness and the ability to overcome hardship even in the darkest of times in order to achieve meaningful change.

The quick and slim synopsis (a.k.a. back cover blurb)

When best friends Kaitlyn and Rebecca begin their first year of high school together, excitement quickly turns to danger. Rebecca finds herself the victim of a physical and cyber bully. Concerned for her safety, Kaitlyn is determined to report the incidents…until she speaks to Rebecca. Much to her surprise, Kaitlyn finds herself on the receiving end of stern and convincing requests to remain silent. Although at first reluctant, Kaitlyn becomes a bystander.

Months pass and without reason to assume otherwise, Kaitlyn is confident their troubles are over. But when tragedy strikes, Rebecca’s darkest secrets are revealed and Kaitlyn is consumed by the pain of her silence and her hesitancy to take action. Amidst serious emotional and mental repercussions, Kaitlyn must extract herself from the depths of her negative state to somehow make good fortune out of misfortune.

    Why I wrote it

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been an antibullying advocate. Taking it a step further, I’m a huge proponent of kindness and the type of person-to-person connection that makes people feel good about themselves. I believe in bringing people up, not putting them down. And I believe that this subsequently goes hand-in-hand with the key to living a happy life.

If we’re not trying to be happy in this world, and if we’re not doing our best to make the people around us happy, then why are we here?

By taking people through a heart-wrenching, eye-opening and awe-inspiring story, it is my vision and my hope that I can have a positive impact on the understandings, perceptions and actions of those who read it.

    Who it’s for

My novel is for young adults. More specifically, it’s written for the audience between 13 and 18 years of age. Having said that, it’s also for parents, educators, and anti-bullying and mental health advocates. It’s for those of you who feel that you or someone you know may stand to benefit from a book with a message about a few of the most pressing issues of our time.

How to get it into your hands
